Former Congressman Anthony Weiner sentenced to 21 months in prison

Former congressmen imprisoned for 21 months.

Scandal-hit former New York Congressman Anothony Weiner has been sentenced to 21 months in prison for sending sexually explicit messages to an underage girl.

Weiner, who quit his congressman role in 2011 following another sex scandal, was in tears as the judge handed down the sentence.

US District Judge Denise Cote said during sentencing; "This is a serious crime that deserves serious punishment."

Layers acting on behalf of Weiner had petitioned the Judge Cote for a non-custodial sentence, something which she rejected.

Joon H Kim, the Acting Manhattan US Attorney said Weiner had; "asked a girl who he knew to be 15 years old to display her naked body and engage in sexually explicit behaviour for him online"

He added; "Justice demands that this type of conduct be prosecuted and punished with time in prison."

According to a statement released by the US Attorney's Office, Weiner will also be subject to three years of supervised release at the end of his custodial sentence.
